The Raymonds' are known for their modesty. Their Wines aren't. When Walter Raymond and his brother started their winery, no one said anything about posing for pictures. But if it weren't for Walt, the Raymonds' would never have produced Generations Chardonnay and Cabernet (two wines that speak for themselves). Plus, we thought a nice photo of the winemaker would be more memorable than a photo of his wines. We still think so. But it doesn't look like we've totally convinced Walter.

The Raymonds' (never ones to boast) may have a hard time telling you how special their new Generations wines are. Others don't have that problem. Take Anthony Dias Blue, who refers to both the Chardonnay and the Cabernet as "gorgeous." Now, if it were up to the Raymonds' to describe these new releases, they would simply say, "Taste them." That's just their way. And, frankly, it's hard to argue with them, seeing that their family has quietly and consistently been turning out some of Napa Valley's most enjoyable wines for five generations.

There are currently three generations of Raymond's in the family business and they do hope you'll find time to visit them at their winery in St. Helena. Just don't get your heart set on taking their pictures while you're there. (Oh-the younger Raymonds' are pretty jazzed about the winery's web site and would like you to have the address. It's www.raymondwine.com.)

"Gorgeous." That's what Anthony Dias Blue said. And no, he wasn't talking about Walt Raymond. He was talking about the Raymond family's Generations Wines. Now Walter Raymond, he agrees with Mr. Blue. But, being a Raymond, he's more concerned about what you'll think. (No, not about him, about the wine.).

It took five generations of winemaking Raymonds to create Raymond Generations Cabernet and Chardonnay, and the three generations currently in the business truly hope you'll enjoy them, at least as much as Mr. Blue did. In case you wondered, yes, Mr. Blue did officially rate the wines. He gave the 1994 Generations Cabernet Sauvignon a 91, calling it "a keeper worthy of a few years in the cellar." And he put the 1995 Generations Chardonnay "up there with the best chardonnays made in this country" with a rating of 92.

You can let the Raymonds know exactly what you think about these, and their other wines, when you visit their Napa Valley winery in St. Helena, or the Raymond Winery web site at www.raymondwine.com

These are the best wines the Raymond family has ever made, and there's a good chance they'll Disappoint you. The thing is, we don't know how many of you will get to try our new Generations Cabernet and Chardonnay. Because you just can't make wines of this quality, in quantity. If you hurry, you might just get a chance to try one. If you don't, you might have to make do with one of the Raymonds' other wines, which are merely delicious.

Here's something interesting about Raymond wines: In a recent tasting, Anthony Dias Blue tried a Chardonnay and a Cabernet Sauvignon from each of the Raymond labels and what struck him was, in his words, "... the consistency from one level to the next. As you move up the line, the wines become more intense and concentrated, but the basic style doesn't change-a clear mark of good winemaking. This collection of wines clearly reflects a wealth of winemaking experience."

So our advice is, do your best to get your hands on a bottle of Generations wine. But if you can't, donÕt despair. The Raymonds have been hand-crafting world-class wines in the Napa Valley for five generations, and your chances of finding a darn fine bottle of something with the Raymond label on it are excellent.
